Capacity before equipment

Can your electrical panel support an EV charger?

Many established West Island homes have 100A electrical services. That does not automatically mean the home needs a 200A upgrade—and it does not mean a charger should be added without evaluating the existing demand. A master electrician reviews the service, panel, breaker space, heating and other large loads before recommending the right path.

What we assess
  • Electrical service and panel capacity
  • Electric heating, heat pumps, pools and spas
  • Charger output and dedicated-circuit requirements
  • Present driving needs and future electrification

Three possible paths

The load calculation guides the recommendation

We recommend the solution supported by the home’s actual capacity—not an automatic upgrade package.

01

Existing capacity

Install a dedicated circuit

When the load calculation and panel condition support the charger, we plan the correct breaker, wiring and protection.
02

Limited capacity

Use approved load management

An energy-management system may control charging during high household demand and avoid an unnecessary service upgrade.
03

Long-term demand

Upgrade the electrical service

When the existing service cannot reasonably support planned loads, we explain and coordinate the appropriate panel or service upgrade.

Chargers and vehicles

Match the charger to the vehicle—not the logo

A charger’s advertised amperage is only one part of the result. The vehicle’s onboard AC limit, connector, equipment settings and circuit capacity determine how much power the car can actually accept. We verify the complete combination before installation.

    Connector and model year

Confirm NACS or J1772 compatibility, adapter requirements and the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance.

  2. 02
    Usable charging output

Compare the charger’s adjustable current with the EV’s maximum AC charging rate. A larger charger is not always faster.

  3. 03
    Equipment configuration

Confirm hardwired or plug-in installation, circuit rating, charger settings and manufacturer instructions.

A practical Quebec advantage

Cleaner energy, predictable home-charging costs

Quebec’s electricity is produced almost entirely from renewable sources, primarily hydroelectricity. Charging at home lets more of your daily driving use that lower-carbon energy while keeping routine charging convenient.

$300–$400

estimated annual home-charging cost

Quebec government estimate for a fully electric vehicle driven 20,000 km per year, with 85% of charging at home. Actual cost varies by vehicle and use.Quebec charging-cost guide

From panel to parking space

The location matters as much as the charger

Charger placement affects convenience, cable reach, installation complexity and future flexibility. We consider where the vehicle parks, its charging-port location, protection from physical damage and the electrical route through the home. Outdoor equipment and connections are selected for the location and Quebec weather conditions.

A clear installation

Four steps to charging at home

01

Assess

Review the panel, service, charger and parking location.

02

Calculate

Complete the residential load calculation and choose the right capacity path.

03

Install

Complete the dedicated circuit, wiring, protection and charger mounting.

04

Commission

Test the installation and review the finished charging setup with you.

West Island homes

Local electrical planning makes a difference

A newer Kirkland home, an established Beaconsfield property and an older Pointe-Claire house may require very different charging solutions. Panel capacity, finished spaces, outdoor parking and previous renovations all influence the project.

EV charging questions

Answers before installation

Does every EV charger require a 200A service?

No. The answer depends on the home’s existing demand and charger load. We complete a load calculation before recommending the existing service, approved load management or a service upgrade.

Can you install a charger for my specific EV?

In most cases, yes. Tell us the vehicle and charger model so we can confirm the circuit, output and installation requirements.

Can load management avoid a service upgrade?

It may be appropriate when capacity is limited. The recommendation follows the load calculation, equipment requirements and future plans for the home.

Can the charger be installed outdoors?

Yes, when the equipment, connections, mounting and protection suit the location. We assess the parking area and cable route before planning the installation.
