Capacity & service

Electrical Panel & Service Upgrades

The right capacity for the way your West Island home is evolving.

We assess the existing panel, service size and planned loads before recommending a panel change, a full service upgrade or an approved energy-management solution.

Start with the right question

Does the panel need replacing—or does the whole service need more capacity?

A panel change and a service upgrade solve different problems. We review the equipment, breaker space, service size and the loads you plan to add before recommending either one. That assessment matters when a home is preparing for EV charging, electric heating, a spa, a larger kitchen or a major renovation.

The goal is not automatically 200A. It is the right capacity and equipment for the home’s actual demand and future plans.

Panel change vs. service upgrade

Two scopes. One careful assessment.

Panel change

The interior distribution panel is replaced while the existing service capacity remains.

  • Appropriate when the service size still fits the calculated load
  • Adds modern breakers and a clearly organized circuit directory
  • Can address condition, breaker availability or insurance requirements

What to watch for

When an electrical assessment makes sense

These conditions do not all lead to the same solution. They are reasons to have the system evaluated before choosing the work.

01Breakers trip repeatedly or lights change when large loads start

Repeated trips or noticeable changes under load can point to a circuit problem, a connection issue or insufficient capacity. Testing and a load review help identify the actual cause.

02The panel is warm, corroded, buzzing or has a burning odour

Heat, corrosion, unusual sound or odour deserves prompt attention. Avoid touching the equipment and call for an electrical assessment, especially if the condition is changing.

03You have an older fuse box or limited breaker space

Older equipment or a full panel can make future work difficult. We review its condition, service capacity and planned circuits before explaining whether replacement is appropriate.

04The home has Commander, Sylvania or Federal Pioneer/Stab-Lok equipment

The brand alone does not determine the complete recommendation. Age, condition, breaker availability, visible concerns, planned demand and possible insurance requirements should be reviewed together.

05You are adding an EV charger, heat pump, spa or major renovation

Large new loads call for a residential load calculation. The result may support the existing service, point to an approved energy-management solution or justify a service upgrade.
